Using the Design for Six Sigma process and the Software Development Life Cycle, a new design process was born to meet Six Sigma's standards and to avoid the previously mentioned problems and issues. With this new design method, Six Sigma businesses were able to design software with the DPMO of 3.4, rather than only getting a rating of 3 or 4 on the Sigma scale.
To meet both Six Sigma's standards and those of the software development lifecycle, seven stages of development were created: Requirements, Architecture, Design, Implementation, Integration, Verification, and Validation.
The Requirements stage is there to investigate and understand what the client needs the software to do while the Architecture stage is where the engineer decides what language and platform it will run on. Design is writing the actual code and usually includes testing as each piece of the code is placed where it belongs in the program structure. Implementation is planning and placing the programs on the machines it runs from, and Integration is making sure that employees know that it is available and ready to use.
